Cho Seon-Hwa

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to research trends related to the adaptation processes of single-parent families from qualitative research articles and draw conclusions as to program effectiveness and experimental research. 33 articles published from 1997 to 2011 were selected for this study. The major results of this study were as follows. First, the psychological adjustment process of single-parent family members showed differing characteristics according to a number of selected categories and variables, for example, whether the subjects were from the one-parent family with a divorced woman as head of the family, a single-parent family headed by a woman, a widow or whether the subjects were children of a single-parent family. The most difficult adjustments were observed in the transition to becoming a single-parent family in the first instance, economic difficulties and the general burdens of child-rearing. Secondly, the program characteristics used for the adaptation processes of single-parent family members were family relationship and family living support, the levels of improvement in psychological adjustment, literature therapy, art therapy and counseling. Thirdly, a number of alternatives to improve the adjustment of single-parent family were suggested; theses were life-support, policy-support and changes in recognition.
